RNI Registration
Title verification and registration for newspapers, magazines & periodicals.
What is RNI Registration?
RNI Registration is a mandatory approval from the Registrar of Newspapers for India (now under the Press Registration General of India, PRGI, following the Press and Registration of Periodicals Act, 2023) required before printing or publishing a newspaper, magazine, journal, or periodical in India. It verifies your proposed title is unique and issues a Certificate of Registration once printing has begun.
Title registration exists to prevent duplicate or confusingly similar publication names, protect a publisher's exclusive right to a title, and maintain an official national record of every periodical in circulation.
The process runs in two stages rather than one: title verification confirms your proposed name is available and not confusingly similar to an existing registered title, which gives you a window to commence publication; the Certificate of Registration itself is granted only after that first issue is actually printed and proof is submitted, since PRGI's registration confirms an active publication, not just a reserved name.
The 2023 Press and Registration of Periodicals Act consolidated and modernised what was previously governed under the decades-old Press and Registration of Books Act, streamlining the registration process and shifting administration to the Press Registrar General of India (PRGI) โ publishers with older RNI registrations from before this transition generally continue to hold valid registration, but new filings and most amendments now proceed under the current framework.

Our Process
Title Verification
We check availability of your proposed title and file the verification application with PRGI.
Declaration Filing
The publisher's declaration is filed and authenticated before the District Magistrate.
First Issue Publication
The publisher prints and circulates the first issue under the verified title within the applicable window.
Proof Compilation
We compile proof of publication (sample copy, printer's certificate) required to support the registration application.
Certificate of Registration
After the first issue is published, we compile proof and secure your RNI Certificate.
Validity & Renewal
Once granted, an RNI/PRGI Certificate of Registration remains valid on an ongoing basis for as long as the publication continues to appear at its declared periodicity โ it doesn't carry a fixed expiry date, though sustained inactivity (an extended printing gap) can put the registration at risk of being treated as discontinued (see PRGI Title Renewal).
Penalty for Non-Compliance
Publishing a periodical without RNI title registration, or using a name confusingly similar to a registered title, can result in the publication being denied registration and losing eligibility for postal/government advertisement benefits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a title be reserved before I start printing?
Yes โ title verification confirms availability first, giving you a window to commence publication before finalising registration.
What happens if I don't publish within the verification window?
The title verification can lapse, potentially making the name available to another applicant โ timely publication of the first issue is important to secure your registration.
Does RNI Registration cover digital-only publications?
RNI Registration specifically covers print periodicals; digital-first media houses only need it if and when they launch a physical print edition.
Can I change my publication's title later?
Yes, but it generally requires a fresh title verification and updated declaration, similar to registering a new title.
