Spice Board Registration
Certificate of Registration as Exporter of Spices (CRES).
What is Spice Board Registration?
Spice Board Registration (CRES โ Certificate of Registration as Exporter of Spices) is mandatory for exporting any of the scheduled spice products from India, issued by the Spices Board under the Ministry of Commerce to regulate and promote spice exports.
The Spices Board, constituted under the Spices Board Act, 1986, exists to develop and promote the export of Indian spices โ a category India has historically led globally โ by regulating exporter quality standards, running research and development programmes, and supporting market access so Indian spice exports maintain their international reputation for quality and food safety.
CRES registration is a one-time, product-category-linked exporter registration โ once granted, it covers the spice categories listed on your certificate for as long as the registration remains valid, without needing a fresh application per shipment. The Spices Board's scheduled list is broad, spanning whole spices, spice powders, spice oils and oleoresins, and spice blends, so we confirm at the outset exactly which categories your registration should cover based on your actual product range.
Beyond registration, the Board also runs quality certification, testing infrastructure, and export promotion programmes (including participation in international spice trade fairs) that CRES holders can access โ many exporters find these secondary benefits valuable once they're past the initial compliance step.

Validity & Renewal
CRES registration is valid for 3 years from the date of issue and must be renewed before expiry, preferably 2โ3 months ahead, to continue exporting scheduled spice products.
Penalty for Non-Compliance
Registrations not renewed on time can be suspended or cancelled under the Spices Board Act, and exporters who haven't filed their Quarterly Export Returns on time are not permitted to renew โ a lapsed registration that isn't revived in time requires fresh registration with full fees as a new exporter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this renewable?
Yes โ CRES is valid for 3 years and renewable before expiry by paying the Board's renewal fee.
What happens if I miss the CRES renewal deadline?
A lapsed registration that isn't revived within the block period can result in loss of continuity, requiring you to register as a fresh exporter and pay full registration fees again rather than the lower renewal fee.
Do I need CRES if I only export processed spice blends, not raw spices?
Yes โ the Board's scheduled list covers processed products like blends, powders, oils, and oleoresins as well as whole spices, so processed-only exporters still need registration.
Can a trading company register without owning a processing facility?
Yes โ traders and merchant exporters can register, though the application will reflect that you're sourcing from registered processors rather than processing in-house.
Does CRES cover quality testing of my product before export?
Registration itself is a compliance requirement, not a quality certification, but Board's testing infrastructure and quality programmes are accessible separately to CRES holders.
What happens if I export spices without valid CRES?
Export shipments of scheduled spice products without valid registration can face customs and regulatory hold, so we recommend confirming registration status before booking any spice shipment.
Is CRES the same as an RCMC?
CRES is the Spices Board's specific exporter registration; it functions similarly to an RCMC in that it's a sector-body registration, and many exporters hold both where their product range spans multiple council categories.
